Dr. Kelly Harrell

Dr. Harrell hails from League City, Texas, though her family is from Louisiana (did someone say crawfish etouffee and jambalaya?). Growing up, Dr. Harrell was an avid equestrian, and she owned every type of animal her parents would allow: dogs, fish, chinchillas, hamsters, birds, tree frogs, and even a crawfish!

After high school, she stayed closed to home and obtained her undergraduate degree in marine biology from Texas A&M University at Galveston in 2014, where she met her now-husband on the beach. They would later return to the same beach to tie the knot!

Dr. Harrell is passionate about research and all the advancements it brings to the world, so she participated in a research project during her time in Galveston on sea otter vibrissae (whiskers). The project investigated otters’ feeding behaviors to further protect these cute sea creatures’ dwindling numbers.

After her undergrad years, Dr. Harrell ventured a bit further north to Texas A&M University (WHOOP!), where she found her love for mixed-animal practice – it allowed her to work with all types of animals. She found she especially likes working with small ruminants (goats and sheep). While she was there, she continued her passion for research by joining a research project that looked at antibiotic resistance – a project that was later published. The summer before her fourth year, she went to Nebraska for a three-month stint working at an 80,000-head feedlot as a pen rider.

“This will always be one of my favorite jobs,” said Dr. Harrell. “It helped me to further appreciate the hard-working and dedicated people of the beef cattle industry.”

She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, then moved to San Marcos with her husband, Logan. They plan to add a rescue French bulldog to their family soon, but in the meantime, she makes the drive to Houston to visit her family dogs, Sadie and Cocoa. She enjoys running long distance, paddle boarding, hiking, kayaking, and reading.

“My favorite part of veterinary medicine is the relationships that we are able to build with our pets and pet owners,” said Dr. Harrell.
